Museum aan de Stroom (MAS)

A strikingly modern monument on the waterfront, the MAS tells the story of Antwerp's history, its vital connection to the world via the port, and a breathtaking panoramic view.

The Museum aan de Stroom (MAS), which translates to "Museum on the River," is a prominent ethnographic and maritime museum located in the Eilandje (Little Island) district of Antwerp. Opened in 2011, this ten-story cultural landmark rapidly became a symbol of a reinvented, modern Antwerp.

Designed by the Dutch architectural firm Neutelings Riedijk Architects, the distinctive building comprises giant blocks of imported red Indian sandstone interspaced with sweeping, curved glass panels. As visitors ascend the escalators, the spiraling "boulevard" offers constantly shifting views of the city. The façade is studded with 3,185 silver hands, a nod to the city's mythological origins and its coat of arms.

Inside, the MAS explores Antwerp's profound connection with the world across centuries of global trade, showcasing almost half a million objects encompassing maritime history, fine arts, and cultural artifacts. Beyond its world-class exhibits, the true highlight for many remains the rooftop terrace. Open late and free of charge, it presents an unparalleled 360-degree panoramic view over the historic city center, the mighty Scheldt river, and one of the largest ports in the world.
